The neck amphora, prefigured in Mycenean (14th-century-bc) pottery and remodelled as a main shape in the Protogeometric style (1000-c. 900 bc), has about 12 distinct shape variations, determined as much by utilitarian as by aesthetic considerations.Noteworthy are the Nolan type (from Nola, Italy), some of which had triple handles popular in red-figure pottery; the Panathenaic amphora.
Large Baluster Vase, Czechoslovakian Amphora Pottery, Mid 20th Century
Actually, this pottery vase was made by the Amphora Porcelain Works, run by Riessner from 1910 to 1945 in the Teplitz-Turn area of Bohemia, now Trnovany in the Czech Republic. Bohemia was part of Austro-Hungary prior to World War I, and examples from there are marked "Austria." Pieces marked "Czechoslovakia" were made after the war.
